A garage can become a holding area for furniture, broken equipment and boxes nobody has opened in years. Before shifting everything onto the driveway, make a plan for what stays and what needs removal.
Choose the space you want back
Decide whether your goal is parking a car, reaching shelves or clearing the whole garage. That goal helps you identify what must move instead of simply rearranging the same clutter. Mark a safe path without climbing over or destabilizing stored items.
Identify belongings that remain, including tools, seasonal equipment and boxes that need inspection. An estimate photo should show the load clearly, but your written notes should explain which visible items are not included.
Check containers before mixing the load
Garages often contain paint, fuel, chemicals, batteries and unidentified containers. Do not combine them with general household junk or empty unknown liquids to make containers easier to move. Ask about acceptance and use official local guidance for materials outside the agreed service.
Appliances and electronics should also be listed separately. A refrigerator, television and pile of cardboard may follow different handling routes. Recycling depends on the materials and receiving-facility requirements, not simply on whether they came from the garage.
Describe access and the full item list
Mention driveway space, steps, narrow side paths and the distance to truck parking. If a large item blocks the garage door, show that in the photos. Do not attempt to lift it out before the crew has reviewed the project.
For a home in Westport, Greenwich or any Connecticut town, specific access details matter more than a broad description such as “easy pickup.” Include bulky workbenches, shelving or equipment that may need disassembly, and explain whether they are fixed to the building.
- Separate keep items and approved removal items.
- Flag chemicals, batteries and unknown containers.
- Photograph the load and loading route.
- Mention fixed shelving or unusually heavy equipment.
Define what a finished cleanout means
Agree on whether the job includes only loose contents or also specific dismantling and debris. Removal does not automatically include repairs, floor treatment, repainting or reorganizing items you keep. Clarify the expected condition before scheduling.
