Getting rid of a mattress in Connecticut does not always mean paying for a pickup. Eligible mattresses and box springs can have no-cost drop-off options through the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program. The right choice depends on the item’s condition, your town’s requirements and whether you can safely transport it. This guide separates recycling access from the carrying and hauling service you may need.

How Connecticut mattress recycling works

Bye Bye Mattress is a program of the Mattress Recycling Council. Its Connecticut guidance says consumers can recycle eligible mattresses and box springs regardless of when they were originally purchased. Foam mattresses and mattresses combining springs and other materials can qualify; crib mattresses also qualify in Connecticut.

The program explains that most town transfer stations participate and allow residents to drop off mattresses for free. That is not a promise that every transfer station accepts every item, serves nonresidents or provides free home pickup. Use the program’s Connecticut directory and speak with the location before loading a vehicle.

Compare free and low-cost mattress disposal options

Start with your town’s participating transfer station or a recycling location listed by the program. Ask about residency, permits, accepted condition, quantity limits and opening hours. A no-cost recycling route can be a good fit if you have suitable transport and can load the mattress safely.

Ask your mattress retailer whether delivery includes taking back the old mattress. The program says retailer take-back may be available at little or no charge depending on retailer policy. Confirm whether box springs are included and whether there are condition or preparation requirements.

Some local governments provide bulky-item collection, but availability and rules differ. Check your municipality’s official information rather than leaving a mattress at the curb based on a general statewide guide. A scheduled municipal pickup and a private hauling appointment are separate arrangements.

  • Check your own town’s requirements, not a neighboring town’s rules.
  • Confirm mattress and box-spring acceptance separately from frames.
  • Ask whether an appointment or resident permit is required.
  • Confirm total costs before traveling or scheduling pickup.

What does not qualify for the program?

The Connecticut program’s excluded-items list includes bed frames, futons, sofa beds, pillows, mattress toppers, mattress pads and loose bedding. Air mattresses without upholstery and mattresses stripped of their padding are also excluded. A location might handle some excluded items separately, but that is not the same as no-cost acceptance under the mattress program.

Do not assume a mattress in poor condition automatically qualifies for free drop-off. For severely damaged, heavily soiled, moldy, excessively wet or frozen items, or items infested with bedbugs or other organisms, the program directs consumers to contact the chosen location for instructions. Acceptance and no-cost handling vary; fees may apply.

Describe the condition honestly before moving an affected item. Avoid dismantling or cutting open the mattress to make it easier to carry. If there is suspected infestation, obtain handling instructions before moving it through shared spaces.

Finding a mattress drop-off near you in Connecticut

Use the official Bye Bye Mattress Connecticut page and its facility directory to identify options near Bridgeport, Fairfield, Stratford, Trumbull, Shelton, Milford, Norwalk or your own town. A nearby listing does not establish that you meet its residency requirements. Contact the facility to confirm your exact situation.

Keep the item dry while you make arrangements. Plan safe lifting, a suitable vehicle and secure transportation. If you cannot safely carry or transport it, a free drop-off location may not solve the practical problem; professional pickup can address the lifting and hauling instead.

When professional mattress pickup makes sense

Professional removal is useful when the mattress is upstairs, the exit route is awkward, you lack suitable transport or other bulky items also need to leave. Send the mattress size, item count, condition, town and access information so the team can discuss the complete job.

CM advertises $85–$100 all-inclusive mattress removal throughout Connecticut, including carrying, loading, hauling and disposal. The exact price within the range is confirmed before work begins. Identify all mattresses, foundations, frames and other items and disclose any moisture or suspected infestation for scope and acceptance review. Do not assume every collected item will be recycled: condition and facility acceptance determine the disposal route.

Common Connecticut mattress disposal questions

Is mattress recycling always free? Eligible drop-off through participating programs may be free, but location requirements and condition matter. Home pickup is a separate service, and excluded or affected items can involve different arrangements or costs.

Can I put a mattress beside my trash? Only if your municipality or contracted collector has confirmed the appropriate collection process. Do not assume ordinary weekly trash service includes bulky bedding.

Can the bed frame go with the mattress? List it separately. Bed frames are not accepted under the mattress program’s no-cost recycling list, although another disposal or hauling route may be available.

What should I send for a removal estimate? Share your Connecticut town, quantities, mattress sizes, condition and any stairs or access restrictions. Photos are optional in CM’s estimate form. A submitted request does not reserve a pickup or confirm a final price.
